- Diagetic Sound: is sound whose source is located somewhere on the screen , sound both the characters and audience can hear.Digetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. Diegetic sound can include voices of characters to the sounds of objects or even music coming from a radio or an instrument as long as its represented as coming from instruments in the story.E.G:
- E.g. This speech when Leonardo is talking
- When the crowd cheers.
- They all start humming
- Phone call converstaion of Father talking
- voice of girl
Often a foley is used.Foley effects are sound effects added to the film during post production (after the shooting stops). They include a foley artist recreating any sounds such as footsteps, clothes rustling, crockery clinking, paper folding, doors opening and slamming, punches hitting, glass breaking, etc. Foley artists recreate the realistic ambient sounds that the film portrays.Foley sounds are diagetic because both the characters here the sounds and so do the audience.
-Non Diagetic sound: is simply sounds that have been added in, this can like music, a narrator and sound effects to add a dramaric effect. Non-diegetic sounds are often used to add drama to moments that would be silent without it.The sound's source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action. There are three main non-diegetic sounds: a score, an original soundtrack, and a voice-over.An original soundtrack (OST)is a soundtrack using pre-recorded , non ochestrial music. Usually used in films aimed at teens, it also triggers emotion.A voiceover/narration can come from a characyer within the film,in which it provides the audience with extra information on visuals,it can also come from a character outside a film,e.g. a narraton which is "Omniscient"(all seeing/knowing).Audiences instinctively trust narrators and pressumer they are reliable.
- At 0.50 seconds of this clip after the title sequence it is a scene of the mother trying to wake up Anna the daughter and the song "happy together is played" which is non-diagetic sound because it is to create atmosphere for the audience ,the characters cant hear that noise. It first plays slowly when Anna is asleep and after the alarm goes off, it plays faster to add to the atmoshphere that Anna should be in a rush and that time is passing quickly in the morning.(The diagetic sound in this clip are the characters voices, the alarm ringing and the horn Harry the little brother blows to wake Anna up).
Sometimes people crossover both diegetic and non-diegetic to create something called trans-diegetic transition. An example of a trans-diegetic transition is when there is a radio on the screen playing a song in one scene which is diagetic sound and when the video cuts to a different scene the music is still playing in a non-diegetic way.Overall, Non-diegetic and diegetic are both important in a movieor tv, since diegeticsounds is all about what the characters hear and non-diegetic is all about what the audience should feel.
-Synchronous sound: where image and sound are in sync , mostly all the time in sound.Synchronous sounds contribute to the realism of film, and also help to create a particular atmosphere.E.G. someone angrily slamming a door and hearing the door bang.
-Asynchronous sound: Where image and sound are out of sync, much more rare. Can be very mysterious, simply because we cannot see its source. It produces the tension from the audiences curiosity. Sometimes the audience does not know what the sound is they hear, but the character in the film can hear it, turn his face toward the sound, and see its source before the audience does. This can add a lot of tension and mystery.
